Hooray for Jai-Alai
Jai-Alai Magazine #10 University of Wynwood In an effort to nurture the literary culture that’s long been brewing beneath the neon buzz of Miami-Dade County, the unflagging, ahem, faculty over at the University of Wynwood (Miami’s oldest imaginary university) has published the much anticipated first issue of their literary publication, Jai-Alai Magazine. The fact that the magazine looks to gather poetry, fiction, essays and art under one roof is about the only thing traditional about the journal.
First, it’s got an expiration date. the issues will count down from ten until one after which they’ll shut the doors on the project. Secondly, all submissions (with few exceptions) must be physically submitted at one of their artist designed drop boxes popping up all over town. The first one (pictured above) is stationed at Sweat Records in Little Haiti and designed by artist/bartender/Snakehole-r Autumn Casey with the second one (designed by Gavin Perry) soon to be unveiled at the flagship Books & Books location in Coral Gables. And lastly, each submission, whether selected by the magazine or not, will be collected in an unedited archive that will serve as further documentation of the cultural milieu of Miami from now until 2015. In many ways, this might be the most intriguing aspect of the magazine’s mission statement.
A partial list of contributors to the first issue includes: Dave Landsberger, Kevin Young, Traci Brimhall, Denise Delgado, Ed Skoog, Matt Gajewski, Jay Snodgrass, and Cecilia Pavon.
